OEM vs ODM vs Private Label Cosmetics: Which Model Fits Your Brand

Compare OEM, ODM and private label cosmetics: who owns the formula, MOQ, timeline and cost. Find the right model for your brand.

Choose the right route

OEM, ODM and private label describe different levels of formula control and customisation. The right route depends on whether you already have a formula, need a new formula developed, or want to adapt a proven base. Sandio Cosmetics supports all three routes from 1,000 pcs per SKU.

At a glance

Compare the three manufacturing models.

The commercial scope is confirmed after the formula, packaging, destination market and quantity are reviewed.

ModelFormula sourceWhat you customiseBest fit
Private labelA proven base formula selected for the projectFragrance direction, packaging, label, fill and selected sensory details where feasibleA brand that wants a faster, lower-development route
OEMYour formula or a jointly agreed specificationPackaging, fill, label and production specificationA buyer with an existing formula or approved technical brief

Private label does not mean ready-made stock. A project still follows formula review, sample approval, packaging planning and written production specification. We do not sell unlabelled stock products from this website.

Decision guide

Which route should you choose?

Start with the formula position, not the label on the route.

01

Choose private label if…

You want a known product direction, a shorter development path and the freedom to build your own fragrance, pack and brand. Final availability and customisation limits are confirmed for the selected base.

02

Choose OEM if…

You already own or control a formula, or you have an approved technical specification that can be evaluated for production. We review compatibility, filling and documentation before quoting.

03

Choose ODM if…

You need a new texture, fragrance or application and want the manufacturer to develop it around your target market, price position and claims route. Sampling and stability review are planned before production.

Cost and timeline

What changes between the models?

MOQ starts at 1,000 pcs per SKU on all routes. The effort, sample rounds and documentation scope can differ.

Formula

Development effort

Private label and OEM generally start from an existing or supplied formula. ODM can involve brief development, bench samples, revision, stability and compatibility checks.

Pack

Component lead time

Stock-component families can reduce tooling and sourcing complexity. Custom decoration, special closures and new moulds generally require more time and quantity.

Market

Testing and documents

SPF, efficacy, stability, microbiology and market-specific documents are scoped to the exact formula and destination. They can change both timing and cost.

Route FAQ

Questions buyers ask first.

Final scope depends on the selected product and market.

Is the MOQ different for OEM, ODM and private label?

The website starting point is 1,000 pcs per SKU for all three routes. Packaging, formula complexity and testing can affect the final production plan.

Does private label mean I receive a ready-made stock product?

No. Private label starts from an approved base formula, but fragrance, packaging, label and fill are planned for the project, and the final specification must be sampled and approved.

Can I supply my own formula?

Yes, subject to formula review, ingredient and packaging compatibility, filling requirements and destination-market documentation.

Who owns an ODM formula?

Ownership, exclusivity and permitted use are commercial and legal terms. They are confirmed in the written project agreement before development begins.

Can all three routes use custom packaging?

Packaging can be customised, subject to component availability, compatibility, decoration requirements and order quantity.

Which route is fastest?

There is no universal answer. A familiar base and available component can move faster than new formula development or bespoke packaging. The schedule is confirmed after the full scope is reviewed.
